Most of us scroll through several websites in a day. But have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scene and how the page or software you are using is so convenient, user-friendly and contains all the features in a single platform? All of this comes under the umbrella of web development.

Let’s understand what this phenomenon is and what it entails.

Defining web development

Web development refers to a series of tasks associated with the process of creation, construction and maintenance of a website or a web application that usually runs online. Web development, in most instances, is used as an umbrella term and entails the process of web design, programming and DBM (database management).

Web developers not only work on the user interface and the visuals of a website, but their job also entails ensuring the website is performing according to the requisite standards.

Types of web development

There are three main types of web development. Let's look at them one by one.

Front-end development

The front-end web development refers to the website's visuals, i.e., the client's end of the site. This is the side that the visitors see or interact with, so it is also called the user interface. Front-end web developers are responsible for how the website looks and feels and whether it is user-friendly.

Front-end web developers thus need to develop a good understanding of programming languages, including HTML, JavaScript and CSS.

Back-end development

Back-end development refers to the creation of the website's structure. It entails the writing of codes and verification that the codes work, user verification, database interactions, business logic and network and hosting configurations.

Back-end web developers are responsible for ensuring that the site is functional, has an optimal speed and is responsive. Thus, they use tools like MySQL or Oracle and server-side languages like Python, PHP, or Ruby.

Full-stack developers

Full-stack web developers are familiar with the aspects of both the front-end and back-end development, so they are capable of constructing an entire website. Small businesses that cannot afford the budget for a large team may find hiring full-stack developers to be more feasible.
